For a number of years Mr. Electric of Portland has dealt with Zinsco panels that have a high failure rate because of circuit breakers that won't trip. We want to educate you about the potential dangers of having a Zinsco panel. Many independent home inspectors believe there are hundreds of thousands of homes in the U.S. today with electrical panels that are either recalled or are more than 30 years old. These panels may no longer protect a home electrical system from overcurrents and shorts. A GTE-Sylvania-Zinsco electrical panel is one of the most hazardous ones. The most common problem with this panel is a circuit breaker that fails to trip for multiple reasons presenting a fire and shock risk. Due to a large amount of aluminum components in the panel, a breaker can melt to the bus bar and won't trip in response to an overcurrent or short circuit; then an extreme amount of power surges into home circuits. The breaker neither trips nor can be shut off. Electricity burns until the wires melt or the Zinsco panel overheats and catches fire.
